'CRM …….. embraces principles and skills which, if combined with a high degree of technical knowledge and skill, will enable the crew to make best use of all available resources to achieve optimum efficiency in the conduct of operations while at the same time maximising safety' (UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Crew resource management (CRM) training).
The techniques of Crew Resource Management (CRM) can lead to a significant reduction in the risk of major accidents in many industries. The CRM principles are proven to maximizes safety and efficiency and are particularly suited to both the upstream and downstream sectors of the Oil and Gas industry.
The Crew Resource Management skills addressed in this training programme are the cognitive, social and personal resource skills that complement technical skills, and contribute to safe and efficient task performance.
The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) definitions of the main non-technical skill categories are:
Situation Awareness (SA)
Decision Making (DM)
Communication (CM)
Teamwork (TW)
Leadership (LD)
Performance Shaping Factors (PF).
The Programme
The CRM programme incorporates the following factors in the process of training supervisors to develop their non-technical skill sets.
Building Culture – To instill CRM concepts within an organization, the first step is mission planning. Taking the necessary steps to plan appropriately and thoroughly will build the right culture and ensure all members of a team are on the same page.
Foundation – Framing sessions are undertaken to set the foundation of the program and develop the necessary specific requirements for going forward. The aim is to develop the same understanding of coaching element deliverables (CRM) with the senior management leadership, who will then be able to communicate a shared Vision, Frame and Expectation. In other words, harmonizing expectations and commitment from management.
Classroom Session – As part as the Foundation stage CRM begins in the classroom, with a significant focus on human factors. The aim is to ensure that class members gain a greater understanding of human limitations including issues associated with perception, attention, memory and cognitive biases.
On-Site Coaching – This is the most important step as coaching will reinforce the learning points introduced during the classroom sessions and also open the door to improvements that might not otherwise emerge. Rather than a set learning event, coaching is a process that helps employees learn better. This is what sets us apart with other training providers.
